Do you ever feel extremely overwhelmed scrolling through your Twitter or Instagram feed? I do.
Social media is both a blessing and a curse; we get up-to-date information from around the world at the touch of our fingertips. On-the-other-hand, that raw and uncensored content can be a lot to digest and live with, especially on an everyday basis.
Recently, I've been tired… of everything. The unjust able killings of innocent black people happening every day, social media drama, racism, colorism, homophobia, and the list goes on... It's so toxic. However, it's so important to be in the know about these situations because it is happening right now and we as influencers and the influenced should know the truth.
Taking a social media break can be any length on time. You can take an hour to breathe and meditate or journal about your feelings on current issues. Detoxing replenishes your energy so when you see these things happening, you can actually be active.
I see all of these things happening on social media and it clouds my mind. I can be scrolling through Instagram stories and I see police brutality happening and I dig myself in a hole and I'm on my phone for hours at a time. I know I'm not the only one.
Taking a social media break is so important for mental health. When you take in so much information you need rest. That includes social media. I go on social media as soon as I wake up sometimes (which is not that great) and I feel as though my day is just me reading information. At the end of the day, I did nothing but scroll through content.
A social media detox can also be a result of productiveness. Whenever I take a break from social media, I get work done. I blog, read, clean, or do whatever I need to do for the day, and I feel so good after. I feel relieved. Being focused on yourself for once is a good thing! You get what you need to be done without being totally distracted by my phone.
Remember, this won't be easy at first. You aren't alone. This will take practice. Being aware of this problem is the first step. Tracking your usage of social media and journaling about how you feel is important. Social media should be a place where you receive helpful information, it shouldn't be overwhelming.
Now that you have this information, try taking 15 minutes to yourself after reading this blog, hopefully, you feel distressed or inspired!
